Prof. Hemraj.B.Chandalia is currently Director, DENMARC and Director, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Jaslok Hospital and Research Center. Prof. Hemraj .B. Chandalia did a 1 year Fellowship, Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Alabama Medical Center in 1967 and thereafter taught as a faculty (Instructor, later Assistant Professor) at the same institution (1968-1970). Dr. H.B.Chandalia has been an Honorary Professor of Medicine and Diabetes for 30 years at the Grant Medical College, Mumbai and trained both under and post graduate students.
He was on the Faculty of Grant Medical College for 30 years (1971-2000).
A passionate teacher, orator and prolific writer, he has brought Indian diabetes journals, books and magazines to international levels.
He has been an active researcher. Along with his colleague, Dr. PR. Krisanaswamy at Jaslok Hospital, he was instrumental in introducing the glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test in India in the year 1980. His research interests have been glycation, lactic acidosis, obesity and diabetes education. He has published more than 80 articles and authored, edited or contributed to more than 50 books. He has additionally been the Editor of the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries (IJDDC), a scientific journal under the aegis of RSSDI for almost twenty years and has been single handedly responsible for molding it into a world class journal. He is now listed as Founder Editor of the same journal.
His painstaking effort towards self - management and empowerment of the patient as well as patient education is evident from his keen interest in being the editor of Diabetes Today, a lay magazine for people with diabetes running into its 27th year of publication. Another such outstanding example is the book "Conquest of Diabetes by Diet and Exercise" which is running into its fourth edition in English and moved into the third edition in Hindi and currently is being translated in Gujarati and Marathi. He has pioneered patient education on regular basis in numerous seminars, massive exhibitions and group classes.
His leadership abilities are reflected in his campaign to establish various long-lasting organizations and undertake pioneering projects. He is a Patron of Research Society for the study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), a 6000 strong association of Diabetologists. He also managed the Research Society, Grant Medical College for several decades. He established a national organization called Association of Diabetes Educators (ADE).
He has been the Chief Editor for the third edition of the RSSDI Textbook of Diabetes mellitus, released in 2015. Dr. H B Chandalia was the convener of a 2 year diploma course (Diploma in Diabetes) at the Mumbai University about 2 decades ago. This course is now administered by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
Dr. H. B. Chandalia has also been instrumental in instituting the subject of nutrition and dietetics as a mainstream course at the University of Mumbai about four decades ago and has been an examiner for the same for many years. He has additionally been pivotal in recognizing the lacunae of expertise in nutrition and dietetics in India and diabetes education and has single handedly elevated the image of these professions. As a result our centre continues to be deeply associated with various academic institutions at many levels in the field of nutrition and dietetics and diabetes education. He has initiated a Diploma in Diabetes education at the SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai. He started a 6-month certificate course for diabetes educators in coordination with SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. His center along with his chief Nutritionist, Ms. Sonal Modi participated actively in the project HOPE to train diabetes educators. He has also developed a website to train Diabetes Educators in the whole country. He has been associated with many premier community hospitals, like Jaslok, Lilavati, Bombay Hospital, Breach Candy and Bhatia Hospital. He established a center of excellence, Diabetes Endocrine Nutrition Management and Research Center (DENMARC) where he tested the model of decentralized health care delivery system by developing three centers spread over the Mumbai metropolis.
